We’re a fine press publisher based in Perth, Australia. We make thoughtfully designed books that are as joyful to hold as they are to read

Our Story

As an avid reader with a background in design, fine press publishing was probably inevitable.

Books and stories help make us who we are, they’re the lens through which we see the world and relate to others. The more stories we read – especially when the perspectives are quite different to our own – the more empathetic we become.

People are drawn to the sublime – whether it is standout packaging or a little nudge to use the stairs instead of the escalator because the stairs have an intricately beautiful design, people across cultures value visual beauty.

A Word on Acacias

Acacia trees are resilient, they stand out, and they bring joy. They are distinct in appearance and easily recognisable for what they are. While over 900 or so of the roughly 1100 species of acacia are native to Australia, acacias can be found around the world. There are species endemic to almost everywhere on earth, specifically, Australia, Africa, Asia, and the Americas, and have become naturalised in Europe where they were introduced.

This press was founded in Australia – we started on one side of the country, then moved to the opposite side, and the species that connects both of these states is the acacia tree. Many indigenous people across Australia, including the Noongar (in the Perth area) whose traditional lands we operate on, and the Dharawal (in the Sydney area) on whose lands we originated, traditionally marked seasonal changes with the blooming of acacia. The explosion of vivid wattle symbolises renewal and resilience; it is a joyful sign that the cold days of winter are ending, and that spring is coming. With so many species of acacia in Australia, and while most bloom in spring, there are always some in bloom throughout the year, with about a third blooming in winter. When out for a walk, seeing that burst of yellow can be a cheerful and unexpected pleasure on a cold, grey morning.

Coincidentally, their fibres are well-suited for making paper, and their fast-growing nature make them a particularly sustainable option.

Our Values

We strive for small and aim for detail. Our print-runs are small and try not to compromise on design and materials. We focus primarily on literary fiction, and especially enjoy bringing to life stories written by or that feature women and minorities who have often been overlooked. We don’t limit ourselves by genre, though whatever we publish has social and cultural significance.

Our Partners

We may be new, but we have teamed up with some of the most respected craftspeople in fine-press publishing, including Phil Abel at Hand & Eye Press and Ludlow Bookbinders.
